![]() Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced a bill that would direct the FHWA to issue a final rule approving the use of Clearview font on guide signs. The agency is required to report back to the committee within 90 days of enactment. The report also requires FHWA to conduct a comprehensive review of prior research on Clearview as well as the safety and cost implications of FHWA’s 2016 decision to terminate its approval of the Clearview font. The bill report states that its provision on highway guide sign fonts “prohibits funds from being used to enforce actions terminating the interim approval of during fiscal year 2018.” The House Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill, released earlier this month, would allow jurisdictions to choose between using Clearview or Highway Gothic for their roadway signs in the FY18 fiscal year. Two proposals before Congress this year may resurrect this upstart font. According to an MIT and Texas A&M study comparing the two fonts, “ legibility of Clearview is superior, regardless of color combination, suggesting that its legibility arises from characteristics intrinsic to its design rather than extrinsic factors (e.g., type size and text contrast and brightness).” Side-by-side comparison of “Highway Gothic” and Clearview typefaces ( Meeker & Associates )įurthermore, the human brain recognizes words by remembering what the whole word looks like – not the individual letters. This blurring of letters is called halation, and is especially problematic for elderly drivers whose eyesight is deteriorating.įor this reason Clearview uses letters that are intentionally spaced and shaped to mitigate halation, as seen below. But when headlights shine off of highly reflective roadway signs, the chubby letters of Highway Gothic’s thicker font can sometimes appear to be a glowing glob of indistinguishable letters. When Highway Gothic was designed, the objective was to have big, bold letters that could be seen from a distance individually. Clearview had a brief stint as the only other accepted highway font for about a decade before the federal government informed states they could no longer use it for new signs.Ĭlearview is found to be more readily visible, especially for elderly drivers, for two reasons: design and the human brain. ![]() Since then, researchers developed another font, Clearview, which is designed to be more visible from a distance. This is the same font that has been used almost exclusively since it was developed in the World War II era. This summer, Congress is wrestling with the prospect of an as-yet unseen trillion-dollar infrastructure package, a contentious battle over privatizing air traffic control, partisan divisions over motor vehicle standards for emerging technologies, and – you guessed it – changing the font of highway signs.Ĭurrently, states and localities can choose whatever font they want for their signs… as long as it’s Highway Gothic. If nothing else, 2017 is a blockbuster year for transportation policy – that is, assuming you like to watch low budget reboots of old thrillers in slow motion.

Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud can credit part of her success to the best advice she. Anjali Sud used fatherly advice to succeed. It's a trial by fire approach, but I think it rewards results, and talent over pedigree, and that can be really powerful. A piece of advice from her father helped the CEO of Vimeo land the job at 34. "We're trying to build a company that also creates those kind of accelerated career paths for people that gives people an opportunity to throw themselves in the deep end of the pool, and own things that they might not normally get a chance to own. ![]() Sud said that it's inspired her to do the same as the head of Vimeo. Chief Executive Officer Anjali has been CEO of Vimeo since July 2017. "I'm the perfect example of that strategy and I'm obviously a beneficiary of it, but I also am a really big believer in it as a philosophy," Sud told Business Insider for an episode of our podcast " Success! How I Did It." 'It has been a 16-year labor of love, rooted in our belief in the power of video,' wrote Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud. Consider the expectations of people who attend a formal dinner. ![]() The speech to inform the audience on a topic, idea, or area of content is not intended to be a display of attitude and opinion. But when we set out to inform an audience, taking sides or using sarcasm to communicate attitude may divide the audience into groups that agree or disagree with the speaker. When we share information informally, we often provide our own perspective and attitude for our own reasons. Your intentions, of course, are not to argue that salsa is better than ketchup or that eBay is better than Amazon, but to inform the audience, increasing their understanding of the subject, and in this case, gaining new skills. The audience may learn an important skill, clean out the old items in their garage, and buy new things for the house with their newfound skills. You may project onto a screen in class the main Web site and take the audience through a step-by-step process on how to sell an item. In the same way, perhaps you decide to inform your audience about eBay, a person-to-person marketplace much like a garage sale in which items are auctioned or available for purchase over the Internet. If your audience members have never made their own salsa, they may gain a new skill from your speech. If you are presenting a speech on how to make salsa from fresh ingredients, your audience may thank you for not only the knowledge of the key ingredients and their preparation but also the product available at the conclusion. Just as you want to increase the audience’s understanding, you may want to help the audience members gain skills. A bar chart, a pie graph, and a video clip may all serve you and the audience well, but how will each ingredient in your speech contribute to their understanding? The audience will respond to your attention statement and hopefully maintain interest, but how will you take your speech beyond superficial coverage of content and effectively communicate key relationships that increase understanding? These questions should serve as a challenge for your informative speech, and by looking at your speech from an audience-oriented perspective, you will increase your ability to increase the audience’s understanding. The second involves your presentation and the illustration of ideas. The first involves what they already know-or don’t know-about your topic, and what key terms or ideas might be necessary for someone completely unfamiliar with your topic to grasp the ideas you are presenting. How well does your audience grasp the information? This should be a guiding question to you on two levels. ![]() Let’s take a look at the functions and see how they relate to the central objective of facilitating audience understanding. There are distinct functions inherent in a speech to inform, and you may choose to use one or more of these functions in your speech. On the other hand, a negative response reaffirms the idea that to communicate a topic, issue, or subject clearly is a challenge in itself and shouldn’t be viewed as a simplistic process. They may, however, inform audiences on issues that may be under consideration in an election or referendum. An affirmative response underscores the idea that informative speeches do not seek to motivate the audience to change their minds, adopt a new idea, start a new habit, or get out there and vote. You might say, “Is that all?” and the answer is both yes and no. Informative presentations focus on helping the audience to understand a topic, issue, or technique more clearly. Explain the difference between exposition and interpretation. ![]()
There are no oceans of vomit in this hospital, Theme Hospital fans, but I'm assured we can expect puddles of sick from some of the game's other diseases. But I spend plenty of time just zooming in on the people wandering through my hospital to see what they're up to. ![]() As ever, the challenge is how you use the space for the optimum results. When people start dying in the corridors and ghosts haunt the place, I hire a more expensive janitor who specialises in capturing ghosts (the spirits of which can ominously be used for research later). When the bins need emptying, I hire a janitor. I then build a General Diagnosis for diagnosing new illnesses, and a De Luxe clinic for curing lightheadedness-namely, when patients have lightbulbs for heads, one of the game's fictional illnesses. One button, though, lets you place furniture and other objects with lovely, satisfying precision: you can put your benches so close together that they'll take up less overall space, and personalise the placement of items throughout your hospitals. Add that little medical cabinet, the rug, that sort of thing, and start to build a more interesting room that'll keep the staff happier and the patients happier as well."Īll the objects you place in Two Point Hospital will snap to a grid by default, which lets you build a hospital in almost no time at all. As you progress, we want people to start making a slightly bigger room, a more interesting shape, start putting in things like windows, a plant and put a picture on the wall. "It's the minimum size and has the required items in it. "It's fine at the start of the game to build quite a utilitarian room," Huskins says. ![]() In each room, you'll be required to place certain objects depending on what the room's function is, but you can then spend extra money to add little niceties when you've finished the essentials. From there, I add another GP's office, another pharmacy and a staff room with a comfy chairs and a dartboard. I drop in some waiting benches for my incoming patients, plus a drinks machine. I hire a few doctors and nurses to staff them. I build a reception desk, a GP's office and a pharmacy. The opening moments of a Two Point Hospital game feel pretty similar to Theme Hospital. Some people just want to be super efficient and make as much money and they really don't care what it looks like, and they'll have rooms right next to each other to maximise walk times. "Some people really enjoyed making aesthetically pleasing reception areas. ![]() ![]() "I think one of the things we learned over the last 20-odd years from the games we've made-The Movies, Fable, playing other people's games, and also looking back at what people said they like about Theme Hospital-it just varies," says Two Point Studios co-founder Mark Webley. These management sims are ultimately about making your operation run like clockwork, but I'm sure many players, like me, enjoy the act of creating something just as much, and would appreciate the opportunity to revisit their hospitals in a kind of sandbox mode even when they've got those three stars. The other key thing here for me is underlining the sense of player ownership for a hospital. We like that idea that these discoveries you're making through research, you can start to use them in all of your hospitals, and maybe it helps you get that third star you were struggling with in that earlier hospital." Now I've got that upgrade for my X-ray machine, I can apply that to any of my machines in any of my hospitals. Because it's tracked at the organisation level, you continue where you left off in the previous hospital, and so you can then finish off that project in that hospital. You might only get halfway through researching that project, but you can jump to one of your other hospitals and think, 'you know what? I'm going to continue that work here'. "For example, researching an upgrade for your X-ray machine," Huskins says. |
